The gynecological disease endometriosis predisposes to complications during hysterectomy. Often, severe cases of endometriosis lead to a hysterectomy. But even when it is necessary to carry out such an operation due to other arising reasons, the very presence of endometriosis complicates the operation. A scientific study conducted by scientists at UT Southwestern Medical Center takes a detailed look at the link between gynecological disease and hysterectomy. Data were taken from over 700 US hospital facilities. The cases of hysterectomy that were not necessary because of cancer were mostly studied. The data indicate that of over 120 thousand performed hysterectomies, about 19 thousand, or just over 15%, are related to the disease endometriosis. Patients with endometriosis often have a longer duration of surgery. They also have an increased risk of needing to perform other surgical procedures during the hysterectomy, such as appendectomy, gastrointestinal tract operations, and operations to remove adhesions from endometriosis tissue. The conclusion is that in the presence of endometriosis, the probability of postoperative complications increases by about 1.7%. Such complications can be both mild – infection of the wound or urinary tract, and severe – sepsis, blood transfusion and re-entering the operating room. Endometriosis is a gynecological disease in which tissue from the lining of the uterus spreads outside the uterus. Subsequently, under the influence of the hormonal cycle of the female organism, inflammation occurs in those parts of the body where there is such tissue, leading to chronic pain. This tissue can fuse with nearby organs, which is the cause of a number of complications. Pain relievers as well as hormonal therapies are used to treat endometriosis. The only way to remove the disease is through surgery, most often laparoscopy. Endometriosis is a disease that affects about 10% of women according to WHO data. Its consequences are serious – the pain of endometriosis can seriously affect mental health, as well as social and professional life.
