The urologist Prof. Shishkov from UMBAL-Plovdiv appeals to cancer patients to undergo surgery on time

The urology clinic of UMBAL-Plovdiv opened a “green corridor” for patient consultations and warned that postponing the examination brings only negative consequences. Consultations are held every working day from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the reception urology office N:16 on the first floor of the hospital. It is necessary to make an appointment in advance by calling 032/905-375. Specialists from the hospital signaled that three people with advanced carcinoma of the bladder were operated on in just one week. Due to the advanced stage of the tumor, the specialists were unable to replace the bladder with a new one, but only removed the natural one. Unfortunately, the patients are young – between 40 and 60 years old, but they will remain disabled, announced the head of UMBAL-Plovdiv, Prof. Dr. Dimitar Shishkov. The professor recalled that the clinic is a bladder replacement center and so far more than 650 interventions have been performed here, in which the organ covered by a tumor process was replaced with a new one made from the patient’s own small intestine. “The survival rate of our patients, operated on time, is more than 18-20 years”, pointed out Prof. Shishkov. At this point, however, urologists are powerless because patients seek help too late. “Sometimes the reason for this is a delay in other medical facilities. And although the diagnosis is extremely clear, the patient is not referred for surgical treatment. I appeal to my colleagues to send people diagnosed with carcinoma on time, so that they can receive full assistance,” said Prof. Shishkov. Detention of patients also has a negative impact on laparoscopic urological operations, because it prevents them from being performed in a timely manner and it is necessary to perform open interventions, the urologist also explained. There has been an increase in cases of prostatitis in men after contracting Covid-19. It usually occurs in such patients who have not had any prostate complaints until now. Another large group of patients are those who have problems with potency. All about 60 people said that it was difficult to have sexual intercourse and sought help from specialists. These patients are being followed up from early 2022 to see what the effects of Covid-19 are on sexual performance. Since the instillation of fear that patients in hospitals will be infected with the coronavirus, now there are cases of oncological diseases in a very advanced stage, UMBAL-Plovdiv are categorical.
