Candidiasis is one of the most common types of vaginal infections. A yeast infection is caused by Candida, a fungus found in the normal vaginal flora. However, when the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina is disturbed, the yeast can “take over” and this, in turn, lead to the appearance of clinical symptoms. Yeast infections cause a lot of discomfort, which means that chronic or recurring yeast infections are even more irritating. Could stress be a trigger for frequent yeast infections? Candida overgrowth can be caused by a number of factors. But stress over a prolonged period of time causes the production of increased levels of cortisol, a hormone that can weaken the immune system and simultaneously lead to increased blood sugar levels. And because the fungus feeds on sugar, candida can grow faster than normal. There is no clinical evidence linking stress with an increased risk of developing fungal infections. However, stress can change the way your body responds to infections and usually makes infections more difficult to treat. In other words, it may not be causing the infection, but stress may be causing it to linger longer. Changes in vaginal pH can increase the growth and presence of candida in the vagina, leading to symptoms such as itching, burning, and abundant vaginal discharge. Other possible causes of vulvovaginae are antibiotic treatment, increased sugar intake, imbalanced gut microbiome. Pregnant women, women who use hormonal contraceptives or have a weakened immune system may also be more susceptible to vaginal candidiasis. What are the ways to prevent yeast infections? 1. Taking a Probiotic Addressing the underlying gut dysfunction and imbalance can help reduce Candida infections. Taking a high-quality probiotic is one way to maintain gut health and therefore vaginal health. There are also vaginal probiotics specifically aimed at balancing the vaginal microbiome. 2. Appropriate underwear Cotton underwear is composed of more breathable fabrics than other materials, which can maintain air circulation and prevent moisture accumulation. 3. Use the right cosmetics One way to prevent fungal infections is to make sure you don’t use soap or detergents with aggressive ingredients. It recommends using an unscented, mild soap or washing foam to prevent any side effects that could lead to infection. Exposing the vagina to irritating chemicals can cause vaginal itching. These irritants can cause an allergic reaction that leads to the appearance of an itchy rash in various areas of the body, including the vagina. Common chemical irritants include soap, bubble bath, feminine sprays, shower gel, topical contraceptives, creams, ointments, detergents, fabric softeners, or scented toilet paper. 4. Limit your intake of processed foods and sugars Eating a well-balanced diet and drinking plenty of water can also help prevent yeast infections. Part of this may include limiting processed foods and sugars, which “feed” yeast in the gut and vagina. Bibliography: https://cwcob.com/womens-health-news/stress-and-yeast-infections/
