What is thrush? Thrush is a type of fungal infection that is caused by Candida albicans, which can develop in the mouth and throat, on the skin or especially on the genitals. Genital yeast infections are more common in women, but they also occur in men. In men, yeast infection can affect the head of the penis. These infections are more common in uncircumcised men. This is because the conditions under the foreskin encourage colonization by the fungus. Fungal skin infections can usually be treated with an over-the-counter antifungal cream. What are the symptoms of thrush in men? Fungal infections in men lead to balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans penis. Typical symptoms of a yeast infection in men include: Redness, itching and burning on the head of the penis and under the foreskin; White plaque at the site of infection; Bad smell; Difficult pulling of the foreskin; Pain and irritation during sex; Pain when urinating What are the causes of thrush? Most cases of yeast infections in men are caused by a fungus called Candida albicans, a dimorphic fungus that grows as yeast and hyphae. Candida albicans is a natural inhabitant of the human body. In a warm, moist environment, this opportunistic fungus can multiply faster than when the body’s immune system keeps it in check. Favorable conditions can lead to overgrowth of fungi.
