The list of reasons to avoid unprotected sex is long enough, but we’ll add one more. Trichomoniasis is one of the little-known sexually transmitted diseases, the transmission of which is high-risk during sex without a condom. It is caused by single-celled parasites of the genus Trichomonas, which are still large enough not to pass through the walls of the condom. Trichomoniasis affects women more often and with more serious consequences. Men are mainly carriers of trichomonas and less often develop an infection, which, however, can lead to serious complications. Infection, as well as the early phases of trichomoniasis, often do not cause any symptoms. Thus, many women do not even suspect that they are infected with microparasites of the genus Trichomonas. At least until the moment when symptoms of vaginal infection appear – white discharge, vaginal itching, burning when urinating. These are the first complaints that appear after infection with Trichomonas. They are provoked by disturbed balance of the vaginal flora. Trichomonas are kind of predators that eat the beneficial vaginal lactobacilli and create the conditions for a bacterial or fungal vaginal infection. Along with unpleasant symptoms, trichomoniasis also creates a risk of more serious complications. It is possible to develop various types of uroinfections or to reach atrophy of the vaginal mucosa. The highest risk of negative consequences occurs when infected with trichomonas during pregnancy. In these cases, there is a risk of premature birth or intrauterine damage to the fetus. NEWS_MORE_BOX Successful prevention of trichomonas infection can be done in both sexes. Avoidance of risky sexual contacts is recommended as a key measure. As a more frequently affected group, women may also rely on additional preventive measures. They should be aimed at maintaining the balance of the vaginal flora, which acts as a natural defense mechanism of the vagina against disease-causing agents. It is good to avoid vaginal douches and other intimate hygiene products containing ingredients aggressive to lactobacilli. The use of such products should always be agreed with a doctor.
