Martin Madzuk of Baylor College of Medicine and his colleagues have published in the world-renowned scientific journal Cell, their latest discovery: the compound JQ1 – an inhibitor of spermatogenesis – the production of male gametes. It also has a lowering effect on the speed of sperm movement. Both of these factors are key to a man’s fertility, and this pill manages to suppress them simultaneously and most importantly: completely reversibly. When the intake of the substance is interrupted for a few days, the testicles begin to produce normal and healthy cells again. The compound JQ1 is planned as a key part of the first “pill” for men – a contraceptive that eliminates the possibility of pregnancy during sex without a condom. Not only does the compound abruptly and quickly terminate a man’s fertility, it manages to do so without any side effects. After its removal from the body, reproductive abilities are quickly restored completely. Although it seems like a frightening prospect for a man, according to a survey conducted in North and South America, nearly 70% of men are ready to take such a medication if it is guaranteed to work and have no side effects. Currently, there are only oral contraceptives for women, which are often based on hormonal preparations and cause many side effects and hormonal imbalance. The scientific team is confident that JQ1 will not affect the testosterone levels in the male body in any way. NEWS_MORE_BOX As so often happens in the history of scientific discovery, this compound was discovered by accident. It was originally intended for use in anti-cancer therapies, but ironically proved to be very “potent” in fertility control. Its clinical trials begin this year, which means that with any luck, it will soon be available on the market.
