Scientists have discovered a method by which to determine which embryos will develop properly and which will not, reported Reuters. According to researchers from Stanford University, the test they created will allow the selection of the healthiest and most viable embryos to be implanted in the body of the mother in assisted fertilization. It will reduce the need to carry out multiple in vitro procedures, as well as the implantation of several embryos to achieve a single pregnancy, which is often multiple and carries corresponding risks for both the mother and the babies, experts say. The results from the study, published in Nature Biotechnology, reveal how day-old embryos develop and why children inherit some genes from the mother and others from the father. “Our results shed light on the development of the human embryo,” explains René Reijo Pera of Stanford University, adding that the methods and algorithms may provide a way to early diagnose the potential of embryos in artificial insemination.
