Bacterial vaginosis due to changes in acidity (Part I)

In bacterial vaginosis, a strong secretion is released from the vagina as a result of the growth of conditionally pathogenic bacteria, which are part of its natural microflora. The condition was previously known as Gardnerella vaginitis, after the bacteria that most commonly causes the condition. However, bacterial vaginosis can also be caused by other microorganisms. The presence of an unusual vaginal discharge requires an examination by an obstetrician-gynecologist to exclude the possibility of serious infections, for example, chlamydial or gonorrhea. Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis A symptom is the presence of an unusual vaginal secretion in a small amount, with a grayish-white color and a specific smell of fish. In most cases, no other symptoms are observed. The “current” appears more often after intercourse, but it should be borne in mind that the set of symptoms is different for each woman. It is possible that bacterial vaginosis does not cause any complaints at all. Causes Bacterial vaginosis occurs when opportunistic bacteria grow as a result of the reduced amount of lactobacilli in the vagina, which is due to the acidic composition of its environment. Low acidity favors the reproduction of anaerobic bacteria. Hence the difficulty in treating bacterial vaginosis – treatment cannot be seen as determining the type of pathogenic bacteria and prescribing a medication to destroy them, as this would lead to the growth of another type of microorganism. Certain factors have been found to increase the likelihood of developing bacterial vaginosis: intercourse with a new partner, multiple sexual partners, douching, and smoking. Bacterial vaginosis also develops in women during a period in which they do not lead a sexual life. Making a diagnosis When complaining about unusual vaginal discharge, the specialist asks a series of questions in order to distinguish the condition from more serious diseases. Worrying symptoms that point to a condition other than bacterial vaginosis are: an increase in body temperature, presence of pain in the pelvic area, sex life style, exclude a serious relationship and past sexually transmitted diseases.
