Ever wondered if there’s a sweet spot for intimacy in relationships? Well, according to a recent study, there just might be!
Lead researcher Amy Muise, a social psychologist at the University of Toronto-Mississauga, found that when it comes to keeping the spark alive, once a week is the magic number for intimate couples. More frequent encounters don’t necessarily equate to greater happiness, but less than once a week can lead to a decrease in satisfaction.
What’s interesting is that this holds true across the board – whether you’re young or old, male or female, in a long-term or short-term relationship. The study, which analyzed data from over 30,000 Americans, also factored in the impact of finances on happiness.
It turns out that a regular sex life has a bigger impact on satisfaction than money does. Weekly intimacy affects three key brain systems, influencing the health of the relationship and overall happiness levels.
First off, sex increases testosterone levels, keeping desire alive and kicking. Then, any form of genital stimulation triggers dopamine synthesis, creating that head-over-heels feeling of romantic love. And finally, reaching orgasm releases oxytocin, fostering a deep sense of attachment.
Now, you might be wondering, can more sex make you happier if you’re currently not getting enough? Well, the study doesn’t have all the answers on that, but it certainly highlights the importance of regular intimacy for relationship satisfaction and overall happiness.
