Understanding Proper Hygiene for Women
Rubbing the skin during the shower is a completely normal process – at least until the moment when it comes to the most sensitive and intimate area of the female body. What product should be used to clean it and how much of it should be used? This information is important because improper treatment of the female genital organs can disrupt not only comfort but also lead to problems such as itching or fungal infection.
The Vagina’s Natural Balance
Unlike the vulva, the vagina can successfully take care of itself. It has a mechanism that keeps it clean. It also has its own little “ecosystem,” so to speak, explains University of Illinois at Chicago gynecologist Jessica Sheppert, MD. Normally, the pH level of the vagina is about 3.5 to 4.5 (it is measured on a scale of 0 to 14). Using hygiene products such as those designed for the body, which have pH levels around 8, can upset the balance in the vagina. This can cause itching, irritation, and an unpleasant odor.
Choosing the Right Products
A better choice of products for washing the intimate area are those that do not contain fragrances, as these can irritate the skin. If you have to choose between soap and shower gel, the expert advises going for soap. The reason is that the shower gel contains a higher amount of alcohol and fragrances. But soap contains strong detergents that excessively dry the skin and harm the mucous membranes. In addition, soap affects the natural pH of the vagina, which leads to a predisposition to the development of infections.
Opting for Specialized Gels
The most suitable products for intimate hygiene in women are specialized gels. The choice should go to them, but with the proviso that not everyone is good enough.
Watch for Signs
In intimate hygiene, one should watch for symptoms such as constant itching, dryness, presence of discharge – these are the symptoms that may signal the need to use a more delicate product.
Frequency of Cleaning
It is recommended to clean the intimate area once a day. If it is less often, there is a risk that the accumulated secretions will not be removed. If it is more than once a day, there is a danger of disturbing the delicate balance of the vagina.
