Almost half of Bulgarian girls aged 15 have had sex

1. Nearly half of Bulgarian girls aged 15 have had sex, 48.18% of children in our country between the ages of 15-16 have already had sex, according to the results of a large-scale study conducted by Gedeon Richter. It is part of the initiated campaign “Program for preserving reproductive health” of the pharmaceutical company, covering 240 schools in 13 major cities of the country. The campaign is supported by the Ministry of Health and Education and the Health Directorates of the Capital Municipality and the municipalities of the remaining 12 cities, including Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, Ruse, Stara Zagora, Pleven, Vratsa, Vidin, Montana, Blagoevgrad and Shumen. 14,927 students from the tenth grades of the schools filled out the survey at the end of a lesson on “Modern Contraception” delivered by the company’s pre-prepared medical specialists, together with the school principals. The conclusion made by Gideon Richter from the campaign is that high school students really need information on how to best protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy. Almost 85% of those who completed the survey confirm the benefit of the lesson on contraception held at school. However, the analysis of the data leads the company’s specialists to think that the implementation of reproductive health education among tenth graders is overdue. Even 13-14-year-olds have sexual contacts – 17% of those participating in the polls say that their first experience took place precisely at this age. Along with the particularly dark unofficial statistics that in our country there are more abortions than births and the encouraging trend from the official data that their number has decreased by 3 times, Dr. Tanya Petkova, product manager from the company’s representative office in Bulgaria, drew attention to a particularly encouraging a fact and at the same time an assessment of Bulgarian society – children learn mostly from their parents about the risk of unwanted pregnancy with unsafe sex (~ 42%). The influence of friends is measured, logically, in the second position, 25.51% of our tenth graders learn that they should protect themselves during sex. 10.40% is the share of the Internet, with just over 9% the positions of medical personnel and a book or magazine are roughly equal, and finally there is the role of teachers in terms of preserving the reproductive health of adolescents. When asked where they would get information about contraceptive methods, the students pointed to the Internet in first place – 42.36%, then friends – 21.53%, parents – 19%. These results give reason to the company to build the site www.ladypill.com, where in an accessible language and in a suitable way for young people to present the ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy, the risks and even the solutions for correct behavior after an abortion. 2. 2/3 of men at risk have benign prostatic hyperplasia Another initiative showing Gedeon Richter’s commitment to the health of Bulgarian citizens,is the implementation of a screening program for the timely diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is carried out with the help of general practitioners in small and medium-sized settlements, who select at-risk patients. 2150 men over the age of 55 were examined by specialist urologists. The data show that 2/3 of them have benign prostatic hyperplasia, 3-5% of those who passed are suspected of prostate carcinoma and are referred for further clarification of the diagnosis.
