For many of us, it sounds incomprehensible and even funny to get sick after having sex. However, there is a certain percentage of people who get flu-like symptoms after intercourse. These include fever, runny nose, lethargy, joint stiffness, and short-term memory loss. Specialists refer to this condition as “Postgasm Illness Syndrome” (POIS). Patients suffering from this syndrome experience similar symptoms as early as puberty. For most of them, the symptoms kill the desire for sex, and in most cases the possibility of sex, due to pain and discomfort. Until recently, specialists believed that POIS was a mental illness, but recent studies conducted in the Netherlands have given rise to another theory regarding the origin of this problem. The specialists included 33 patients who suffered from POIS. They injected each of them with a diluted solution containing their own sperm. NEWS_MORE_BOX The results showed that 88% of the men tested had a positive allergy test, i.e. they were allergic to their own semen. Some experts are skeptical that allergies are responsible for this problem. According to David Resnick, MD, director of Presbyterian Hospital Columbia, the theory that men are allergic to their own semen is almost impossible, because with such a problem, symptoms would occur during production, not after ejaculation. POIS is an issue that has been addressed recently. Doctors are of the opinion that an effective treatment could be found for men suffering from it. They advise patients not to feel ashamed and worried, as this would lead to additional stress, affecting their emotional and physical health.
