Cervicitis – inflammation of the cervix

Cervicitis – inflammation of the cervix

1. What is cervicitis? Cervicitis is inflammation of the cervix. The cervix is located in the highest part of the vagina and can be felt with a finger. At the same time, the cervix is the lowest object of the uterus. This is the reason why this anatomical area, due to its anatomical structure and location, is called the “cervix”. Cervicitis is an extremely common disease. According to gynecologists, every woman suffers at least once in her life from inflammation of the cervix. It is less common in women of lower sexual status and virgin girls. 2. Clinical picture The clinical manifestation of the disease is very characteristic. It occurs with dull pain in the vaginal area, weak secretion from the side of the cervix, light vaginal bleeding and severe pain during sexual intercourse. Vaginal discharge from the cervix is seen as a gray-whitish discharge. It occurs with the characteristic symptoms of dull pain in the neck or itching. Bleeding can occur spontaneously, without external provocation, or with more forceful penetration with the penis and touching the neck with the head of the penis. NEWS_MORE_BOX 3. How is the diagnosis made? The only way to make the diagnosis is after vaginal douching, during which the cervix is palpable as enlarged, warm and painful. When inserting a vaginal catheter, the cervix is noticed with the typical forms of inflammation – swelling, redness and severe pain. Sometimes it is necessary to take a sample to determine the presence of bacteria on the mucous membrane of the cervix. The reasons for the manifestation of the disease are very different. They usually remain hidden from the treating obstetrician-gynecologist. Cervicitis caused by chlamydial bacteria is characterized by a particularly high frequency. This is a bacteria that becomes extremely “famous” in sexually active young people who do not use protection. Other microorganisms that can cause the development of cervicitis are trichomoniasis and gonorrhea. It is not excluded that cervicitis develops after external trauma – during rough intercourse, insertion of a contraceptive cap, female condom, tampon and other vaginal implants. The allergic cause of development of cervicitis is also known. It usually develops into a chemical agent in a lubricant or the wetting agent of condoms. An allergy to products from a man’s semen rarely develops. 4. What treatment is given? It is recommended to proceed with therapeutic treatment of the problem after the diagnosis of cervicitis. The disease is not serious, it does not represent a typical factor for carcinogenesis, but in some women it can lead to sterility, by dense adhesion of the narrow-lumen canal of the cervix, through which spermatozoa pass from the man’s seminal fluid during ejaculation to allow fertilization to occur. Antibiotics are used to treat cervicitis. Generally, broad-spectrum antibiotics from the group of penicillins and cephalosporins are used. If antibiotic therapy does not show the desired result,is switched to cryotherapy by cooling the cervix, laser therapy and cauterization with an electric wire that is placed on the cervix.
