Hey there! Can you believe it’s been almost 30 years since October became the dedicated month for fighting breast cancer worldwide? Despite increased awareness, many folks still aren’t taking the necessary steps for early detection, according to experts. This October, the “Doverie” medical complex is stepping up to raise awareness and promote regular check-ups.
Every Saturday until the end of October, “Doverie” is offering free exams by a mammologist as part of their campaign. I had a chat with Dr. Sonia Tanusheva, who’s been a part of the “Doverie” team since 2009, about breast cancer, its risks, and the importance of early diagnosis.
So, Dr. Tanusheva, what exactly is breast cancer? Well, it’s the most common tumor in women, affecting 1 in 8 women in the US. It’s a serious health issue both globally and here in Bulgaria. Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control, forming a malignant tumor. It usually develops in the upper outer quadrant, more often in the left breast.
Who’s most at risk? While it’s true that 85% of cases occur in women over 40, we’re seeing more cases in younger women too. That’s why it’s crucial for women of all ages to perform self-exams and get regular check-ups. The earlier we catch it, the better the chances of beating it.
How do we detect it? Well, every woman should do a monthly self-exam starting at age 20. It’s easy and painless, and the best time to do it is around the 14th day of your cycle. Clinical exams by a specialist are recommended yearly for women aged 20-30, and every 6 months after 40.
And what about diagnostic tests? There are three main types: palpation, ultrasound, and mammogram. The doctor decides which is best based on age and other factors. For women under 46, ultrasound is usually recommended, with mammograms reserved for serious cases.
Can we protect ourselves? Absolutely! Lifestyle plays a big role. Things like having more children, limiting alcohol, and staying active can help reduce the risk. But the best defense is regular check-ups. And guess what? “Doverie” is offering free mammologist exams every Saturday this October! Just call ahead to book your spot.
