Hypospadias is a condition in which the external opening of the urethra is located on the ventral (lower) surface of the penis. This creates the impression that the penis is small and underdeveloped. The corpora cavernosa in these cases are not affected and develop normally. In hypospadias, the curvature of the penis during intercourse becomes more pronounced and creates an obstacle to its performance. What types of hypospadias are different? Hypospadia glandis – the urethra opens on the head of the penis; Hypospadia coronaria – the urethra opens at the neck of the penis; Hypospadia corporis – the urethra opens on the lower surface of the penis; Hypospadia scrotalis Hypospadia perinealis – the opening of the urethra is located in the perineal area/ this is the area between the anus and the scrotum/ Symptoms The opening of the urethra can be found in different places on the lower surface of the penis, scrotum and perineum. Very often it is combined with varying degrees of curvature of the member. The urethral opening is usually stenotic (narrowed) and children urinate in a thin stream directed towards their legs. The foreskin (the skin over the glans) at the bottom does not cover the glans in children with hypospadias and looks like a hood. NEWS_MORE_BOX Treatment The type and duration of surgical treatment are determined by the position and width of the urethral opening and the degree of penile curvature. The skin from the head of the penis is often used for this. Therefore, children with hypospadias should not be circumcised. The operation is usually performed between the 18th month and the third year. It is performed under general anesthesia and lasts several hours. Sometimes more than one operation is required.
