Masturbating can have an impact on testosterone levels as well as a man’s overall physical health. According to a study published in the Journal of Zhejiang University, masturbation is reported to increase testosterone levels up to a week after ejaculation. The increase is much greater than that from ejaculation during intercourse, researchers explain. Another study featured in Psychology Today found that even during masturbation, testosterone levels rise. As we age, this can have a number of health benefits, especially given the fact that in men, testosterone levels normally drop by 65% by age 75. This decline is partly responsible for significant physiological changes seen in men after age 40 – 45. Low testosterone levels are associated with decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle tone, increased blood fat, low bone density, atherosclerosis. Scientists have come to the conclusion that in men over 50, frequent masturbation helps to remove secretions from the prostate gland, which may contain substances leading to tumor processes, thus reducing the risk of prostate cancer. For now, masturbation is considered a normal, healthy, pleasant and safe sexual activity. It can be considered a problem only when it starts to harm the relationship and sexual activity with the partner, experts explain.
