What additional conditions can lead to pelvic pain in men? Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome is a common cause of pelvic pain in men. The condition is often called chronic nonbacterial prostatitis. The causes of chronic pelvic pain syndrome remain unknown. Other symptoms of the condition may include: Lower back pain; Pain in the genitals; Frequent urination; Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting; Painful urination or painful bowel movements; Worsening pain during sex; Erectile Dysfunction Pain Syndrome After Vasectomy Vasectomy is a form of contraception (birth control) in men. A vasectomy is a surgical procedure in which the vas deferens are joined, preventing sperm from moving from the testicles to the penis. About 1 to 2% of men develop chronic pain after a vasectomy. This condition is called post-vasectomy pain syndrome. Post-vasectomy pain syndrome causes pain in the genital area that spreads to the pelvis and abdomen. Other symptoms include: Pain during sex; Painful erection; Painful ejaculation; Erectile dysfunction; Other causes of pelvic pain in men In some cases, abdominal pain may radiate to the pelvic area. This type of pain can be caused by: Hernia; Irritable bowel syndrome; Appendicitis; Abdominal adhesions; Pain in the lower back and pelvis; Pelvic pain in men can also present with pain in the lower back. Possible causes include: Kidney stones; Prostatitis; Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome How is the cause of pelvic pain in men diagnosed? During the physical exam, the doctor checks the pelvis and abdomen for swelling and tenderness. Blood tests allow the detection of signs of infection or poor kidney function. If problems with the urinary tract are suspected, a urine test is prescribed. Imaging tests such as ultrasound, computed tomography or nuclear magnetic resonance may be ordered. What are the ways to deal with pelvic pain in men? For pelvic pain, a heating pad can be used at home. Heat reduces pain signals, which provides temporary relief. Although it is possible to manage pelvic pain at home, it is important to treat the underlying cause. Different treatments can be used for different causes of pelvic pain in men: Antibiotics Some causes of pelvic pain are treated with antibiotics. These conditions include: Urinary tract infections; Prostatitis; Sexually Transmitted Diseases; Pain medications If over-the-counter medications don’t work, your doctor may prescribe stronger medications. The dose recommended by the doctor should always be followed. Surgery In more serious conditions, surgery may be necessary.
