Although a greater proportion of teenage boys than girls watched and fantasized about sex they saw in pornographic films, there was no difference between the sexes when it came to fantasizing about sex. This is according to a new study from Uppsala University, published in the Journal of Development and Behavioral Responses in Teenagers. Magdalena Mathebo, a researcher at Uppsala University’s department of women’s and children’s health, used special questionnaires investigating the sexual experiences and consumption of pornography in more than 800 high school students aged 16. The study shows that there are no differences in the actions of girls and boys who think that their sexual behavior is greatly influenced by pornography. Boys and girls who view pornography have more positive attitudes toward pornography than those who do not. NEWS_MORE_BOX The results found something unexpected, namely that one in ten girls in the consumption group said they watched pornography less than they would like. Also, there was no difference between girls and boys regarding fantasies about sexual acts and that an equal proportion of girls and boys reported that pornography influenced their sexual behavior. Girls in the study were more sexually experienced than boys when it came to oral, vaginal and anal sex, but no gender differences were found regarding different types of sexual partners, such as sex with a friend, one-night stands and group sex. Based on traditional gender roles, it is not surprising that adolescent attitudes in the study were no more favorable toward girls who had a variety of sexual partners than toward girls who had only one sexual partner. However, an interesting finding is that among the most sexually experienced adolescents, girls and boys are equally interested in sex, which bodes well for gender equality.
