Surgery to remove the prostate gland – a radical prostatectomy – can add 20 years to the life expectancy of 80% of patients with advanced prostate cancer, according to a new study. It involved prostatectomy patients suffering from cancer that had spread outside gland, known as cT3 prostate cancer. 80% of people who underwent the procedure had a better chance of living a normal life compared to people who underwent only chemotherapy and hormone treatment, the researchers said. Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men. The special thing about this species is that it develops slowly and its existence may not be known for years. In the initial stages, the disease proceeds without the presence of visible symptoms. The only way to detect it is through prophylactic examinations, during which rectal douching or examination of the tumor marker prostate specific antigen (PSA) is done. PSA is a protein produced by the cytoplasm of prostate cells. During examination, it is observed for increased values of the protein, which is an indicator of prostate disease and the type of disease.
