Older men enjoy satisfying sex lives well into their golden years, finds a new study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. Experts surveyed about 2,800 Australian men, aged 75-95. The results showed that a third of them had at least one sexual encounter with a partner in the past year, and 56% reported having a satisfying sex life. Intimate contacts are important for 48% of respondents, including men aged 90-95. It is a fact that sexual activity decreases with age. But survey data shows that today’s 70-year-olds are having more sex than their peers in the 1990s. In fact, medical factors such as low testosterone levels, prostate cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and depression are associated with a lack of sexual activity among the men studied, the scientists’ analysis shows. The authors of the study found that social factors such as contact with a partner who is not interested in sex, or no partner at all, also limit the possibility of having sex later in life. “Sexuality is an innate part of our lives as human beings. We are sexual beings from birth to death,” says Michael Rees, director of Indiana University’s Center for Sexual Health Promotion. Another study conducted a few months ago found that about 30% of Americans over the age of 80 are sexually active. The study analyzed the sexual behavior of America’s older population, funded by the company that produces one of the most famous brands of condoms in the United States – “Trojan condoms”.
