The signs of low testosterone levels in men can be varied. Low libido, erectile dysfunction, a number of psychological changes, such as unfounded fears and irritability, are characteristic. Disorders in beard growth and a decrease in muscle strength may occur. Testosterone levels fall only under certain conditions. One of these conditions can be vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is needed along with zinc, magnesium and B vitamins for the formation of testosterone. In addition, vitamin D is involved in the regulation of testosterone levels by inhibiting aromatase, an enzyme that initiates the conversion of testosterone to estrogen and thus can lower its levels. Vitamin D and Testosterone Levels A study published by researchers at the Medical University of Graz in the journal Hormone and Metabolic Research shows a link between testosterone levels in men and vitamin D, which is particularly concentrated in the male genitalia. Testosterone levels were analyzed in 54 healthy overweight men. Testosterone values were borderline low. Vitamin D levels were also low at about 20 ng/mL, with optimal levels of 40 to 60 ng/mL. One part of the study participants took 3,000 IU of vitamin D and the other a placebo for one year. Over time, vitamin D levels in the group taking the vitamin doubled and testosterone levels also increased. To achieve optimal levels of vitamin D, it can be taken as a supplement or by increasing the amount of time the skin is exposed to the sun, especially in the fall and winter. Another study on the relationship between vitamin D levels and testosterone confirmed that the higher and optimal the level of vitamin D, the more optimal the testosterone levels of the participants. In this study, the participants were older, ranging in age from 65 to 89 years old. Of course, vitamin D deficiency is not the only cause of low testosterone levels, so taking vitamin D should be only one component in an approach to increasing male sex hormone levels. Before taking further measures to increase testosterone, the levels of the hormone should be examined and the cause of the symptoms should be determined, as well as possible root causes in the condition of the male genital organs should be sought.
